Neurosurgery

dr_cervantesDr. Joel Cervantes - Neurosurgeon and spine surgeon

Dr. Joel Cervantes trained in the medical management and surgeries of the brain, the spine and the nerves that run through the body. He studied at the General Hospital in Mexico City under UNAM, the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He began his medical studies in 1989, and for 16 years was away from Belize. After studying general medicine, he did post graduate studies in research under UNAM. He moved on to general surgery, and then went into neurosurgery. Thereafter he specialized further in spine surgery as a higher area of neurosurgery, and then a further branch called functional stereotactic and radio neurosurgery, which is surgery for Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, or abnormal movements and tics, and even for certain psychiatric conditions; it also involves surgery for pain, when medications no longer seem to work. He has been working back in Belize since 2005, returning to the KHMH in May 2010, having served before at Belize’s national referral hospital.

Dr. Cervantes credits his love for this area of surgery as beginning when he was 3 years old, and with his deep fascination at that age for dogs and cats that would get knocked down by motor vehicles. He vividly recalls seeing the animals’ skulls cracked open and the animals twitching then dying. This started his urge to investigate later on the details of why the twitching occurred that then led to death. He credits strong values of his early education years in Belize with developing his deep desire to come back and help develop medicine in Belize, serving Belizeans and setting standards. He considers himself a son of the soil, here to serve in a Christian manner. And, above all, says Dr. Eck, a little laughter is needed in everyone’s life for healthy living. His hobbies include singing, especially patriotic songs and Christmas carols, and he was once an active member of the Belize Choral Society. Reading, and writing poetry and prose, also go hand in hand with his love for basketball and track and field; in fact, he was a junior athlete in his earlier years. Medically, he has an interest also in the dissection of cadavers for research.

Dr. Cervantes wishes to set a golden standard for the practice of neurosurgery in Belize.
