Dr. Mark Musa – Gastroenterologist/Internal Medicine

dr_musaGastroenterology is the specialty that deals with the digestive system, any problems or investigations related to the stomach, small intestine, colon, liver and the bile ducts. Dr. Mark Musa did his general medical training at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad in 1998; going on to work and specialize in England at an affiliate of the University of Manchester. There, he specialized simultaneously in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, finishing in 2007 and returning to Belize. In February 2008, he joined the KHMH.

Dr. Musa sees patients through emergency, on ward, and in specialist clinics, seeing an average of 10 patients per clinic. Additionally, two sessions of endoscopy, specifically, colonoscopy, are also offered, on Mondays and Fridays, at an average of about 6 procedures performed per week.  Imaging is used in viewing the gastrointestinal tract, both the upper digestive system (examines the throat, esophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine) that requires minimal preparation, and viewing of the large intestine, the colonoscopy, which requires a bit more preparation. The KHMH currently has basic diagnostic equipment; Dr. Musa looks forward to doing a lot more for both accident and emergency and scheduled treatment through the development of this therapeutic part of endoscopy services at KHMH, such as with more equipment for noninvasive treatment where possible, as in treating ulcers, bleeding veins, hemorrhoids or removing polyps,

Dr. Musa credits his motivation with the desire to make his knowledge and skill available to the most people possible; this is why he places importance on working at the country’s national referral hospital. He also places importance on raising public awareness that tests and investigations and treatment can be done to this particular system, that it is available at KHMH at a reasonable cost, and efforts on how to assist people who cannot afford it as well. Access, awareness and education to the patient and improving health care are guiding posts for him. He credits his mother, who is a nurse, as being a great influence in his choice of career as well as his natural interest in the sciences, specifically in biology and chemistry rather than physics and mechanics. His guiding mantra is that medicine is a multidisciplinary team approach, with each member giving 100%. In his free team, Dr. Musa enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his children.
