Internship Program Model

Although still undergoing development, the basic pattern is that interns do four attachments each of three months duration and rotating in the fields of pediatrics, medicine, ob/gyn, and surgery. Interns began then by being posted throughout the country’s health system. It is patterned on the one used by the University of the West Indies to assist in meeting the standards of regional bodies like the Caribbean Association of Medical Councils and the corresponding body in the Central American system, given that Belize is a member of the Sistema Integracion Centroamericana. Since its inception, it has been decided that the rotation in surgery includes now 2 months in general surgery and 1 month in orthopedics surgery. The focus was on interns’ acquisition of clinical experience and their continuing medical education; since 2008, upgrades to the program were made, along recommendations made from visiting UWI professor in charge of the UWI Internship Program following his 2008 visit. Institutional strengthening for the program is one of the recommendations, with more formalization of the criteria required of the hospital conducting the internship. An intern doing pediatrics rotation at Western Regional, for example, then comes to KHMH to get experience in the neonatal intensive care unit, a unit which KHMH can be justly proud.
