Checklists & Training

The first priority is to get the intern to acquire clinical experience under supervision according to checklists of basic skills for the area – clinical basic skills, with an established set of procedures. Then the next focus is continuing medical education, with a regular Friday morning meeting when the entire medical body meets. The individual wards also have their own individual continuing education sessions, with, for example, Internal Medicine meeting Thursdays and Fridays where specialists, medical officers and interns meet and discuss. Interns also attend a weekly meeting at which they come together and they make their formal presentations of clinical topics with particular reference to the local setting. Interns also become conversant in matters of medical practice in Belize: from as basic as being able to cite the Hippocratic Oath to understanding Belize’s health structure and laws of registration.
